Toyota Land Cruiser is the equivalent of four-wheeled ox. While the full-size sport utility vehicle is one of the slowest-selling vehicles in the car coast America - and one of the most expensive - those who already have one tend to be very loyal fans. We recently spent a week with the current "Series 200," the latest generation of ute 'respectable that has been in production since the 1950s. What has given the longevity of the Land Cruiser and how it compared with the Lexus LX570, is almost identical twin? Most importantly, if we become faithful followers of the Land Cruiser in the process?
Land Cruiser is as legendary as John Wayne. Off-roader traces its roots back to 1951, when Toyota Motor Corporation built itself a rival, rough war proved to the U.S. and British Land Rover Jeep. The Japanese automaker called the vehicles owned by "BJ Jeep." After proving himself by raising the sixth stage of Mount Fuji - no other vehicle has ever accomplished the task - the state of the National Police Agency ordered 289 copies. In 1954, hanji Umehara comes with a "Land Cruiser" name famous.
BJ Early and FJ model followed by many generations of Land Cruiser, which each bear the name of a numeric series (Model 20, Series 30, Series 40, Series 55, Series 60, Series 70, Series 80, Series 90, Series 100 and 120 series , which ended production in 2007). In 2008, Toyota introduced the all-new 200 Series, based on a heavily modified Toyota Tundra chassis. While other countries are offered a bevy of engine choices, including configuration turbodiesel, eight-passenger truck is loaded with features and is positioned as the flagship in the U.S. where it is sold as a Land Cruiser and also re-badged as the Lexus LX570.
The present-day Line 200 first showed to extreme analysis from loyalists, which was estimated. While Toyota installed it with a more large braking system program and dealt with entry revocation difficulties that had affected its forerunners, many thought the appearance was far too careful. Nevertheless, the car was as durable as ever, effortlessly competent of major the competing Area Rover Variety Rover through the harshest of off-road conditions. It's that same strength that constantly make the Area Cruiser motorcycle the car of option for NATO and soldiers around the planet. As well as the baddies they're fighting.
At the center of the Area Cruiser motorcycle is a burly 5.7-liter V8 (3UR-FE), which is also given to the Toyota Tundra, Toyota Sequoia and Lincoln LX570. With an all-aluminum structure, the 32-valve program builds up 381 energy at 5,600 rpm and 401 pound-feet of twisting at 3,600 rpm. The common indication is a six-speed electronically-controlled automated indication submitting energy to a full-time four-wheel-drive program.
Surprisingly smaller overall stature of the Toyota Sequoia, Land Cruiser is a legitimate vehicle that eight passengers comfortably seats five. There are two bucket seats in front with a bench of three conventional position in the second row. Three additional seating positions are stored, such as the jump seat on the plane C-130 military transport, foldable rear cargo area side walls until the troops need them (yes, they are wasting valuable cargo space in the process). A drops quickly pulled them into place. Once secured, do not set expectations too high as an accommodation on the third line is clearly the third grade. Tight legroom and seating position will not even keep the kids happy for a long time. If that does not deter you, crawled into the back streets through the second row seats will fall.
In addition to the three passengers thrown into the back, five other occupants in the cabin of the Land Cruiser will be very happy. Four-zone climate control standard, with 28 (!) Ensure ventilation gentle wind that blows across the passenger cabin. For extreme cold, when a traditional-based coolant heater may not be up to the task, Toyota is also equipped with standard electric-ceramic element is heated to keep the passengers comfortable. Other standard features include privacy glass, smart key, heated front seats, auto-dimming mirrors and 14-speaker JBL premium sound system with in-dash six-disc CD changer. A very short list of options includes a rear seat entertainment system, simulated wood / leather steering wheel, cool box, rain-sensing wipers, rear spoiler and second row heated seats.
While cattle have a very hard time balancing on three legs (they are often hung in a cloth when shoeing), the Land Cruiser is as surefooted as a mountain goat both on-and off-road. Land Cruiser All sold in our market are equipped with Toyota's Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) as standard equipment. In layman's terms, it means the front and rear sway bars followed by a hydraulic cylinder. By varying the pressure exerted on each stem, and through the pressure sensing valve, affects the stiffness can be changed while driving. At one end of the scale sets its own system for companies to significantly reduce body roll SUVs on the road during cornering. At the other end, the system will release yourself from the sway bar allows each wheel to provide a memorable trip to the temporary off-road. This is an innovative engineering that seems to work very well.
Weekends Land Cruiser was in our garage is also the same weekend we race class specification Porsche Boxster with Porsche Owners Club in Willow Springs. Easily Land Cruiser comes with a standard Class III towing hitch, we decided to put it to work. Hooking the trailer to the Land Cruiser is simple, thanks to back-up camera that makes the job easy to maneuver. When wheel trailer truck bears the weight lifted and the tongue, the back of the Land Cruiser down a few inches. It's not a problem until later, when we look at our fixed lights dazzling oncoming traffic at night. It is time our only hope for self-leveling air suspension is LX570.
Package Boxster / trailers come in around £ 5500-8200 safely below the limit of pounds of towing Toyota - and the SUV barely broke sweat. Fourth gear in the six-speed gearbox is a direct drive, gear while both fifth and sixth are overdrive ratios. An electronic control unit estimates road conditions to choose the right equipment and in practice do a very good, with very little hunting even when towing. In addition, the machine also features a water-cooled oil cooler to help temperature control while under extreme load. Land Cruiser makes an excellent tow vehicle with an almost perfect combination of power, stability and passenger comfort (we also really liked "Cool Box" to keep our drinks cold).
Unfortunately, while the Land Cruiser ox reminds us to do with temperament and work ethic, it drinks like a dehydrated camel. The EPA rates the vehicle at 13 mpg city and 18 mpg highway, but our real-world experience says to expect a lot less if you do not spend much time on the highway. Side of which is that a large 24.6 gallon fuel tank promises a semi-decent range between fill-ups costly.
Nitpicking, our only complaint with the Land Cruiser has nothing to do with the third row of seats or terrible thirst for fuel - they are a compromise we can live together. Our frustration was found with 80's era simple halogen lamp. Toyota touts ordinary light such as "field serviceable" and citing concerns with the glare of modern HID systems. We say we have seen the light of a battery-powered LED flashlight.
Besides the issue of illumination, we found the Toyota's big fun and easy to live together. Acceleration is impressive (Trend bike clocked 0-60 only 6.5 seconds) and the brakes more than up to the task. A comfortable driving position and visibility ruled by outsiders who do not ever bother us whether navigating city streets, changing lanes on the highway or when parking (reverse camera helps). Children find it easy to get both in and out, and they comment on the large door handles, large windows, air vents on top of head room and generous storage in the cabin. Land Cruiser is expensive, but we do not think any owner would feel buyer's remorse.
Our biggest regret is that during our week with the Land Cruiser we never come close to exploring its true capabilities. There is no opportunity to crawl over the sand dunes in Dubai, navigating dark forests of the Amazon or even jump into the river and cover the rim with muddy water. We show some of the city of Los Angeles, with the exception of towing a race car to the high desert, it could just as easily be achieved by ... well, a Toyota Highlander is much cheaper. Looking at the domestic sales volume of cars just last month (the company sells only 5755 Highlanders and Land Cruisers 99th May) we are not alone in our thinking.
So, why choose Land Cruiser when his little brother will do almost as well? Why choose a cow on a donkey?
Low mule is cheap, but also far less talented. Farmers who know better, and can afford it, will pay higher prices for cattle because it is historically proven ruled toilets premium to the value of temperament, ability, ruggedness, reliability and long term. Interestingly enough, and not too surprisingly, they are the same qualities that make the 2012 Toyota Land Cruiser a smart purchase and justified for several thousands of Americans every year.
