Nitpicking, our only complaint with the Land Cruiser has nothing to do with the third row of seats or terrible thirst for fuel - they are a compromise we can live together. Our frustration was found with 80's era simple halogen lamp. Toyota touts ordinary light such as "field serviceable" and citing concerns with the glare of modern HID systems. We say we have seen the light of a battery-powered LED flashlight.
Besides the issue of illumination, we found the Toyota's big fun and easy to live together. Acceleration is impressive (Trend bike clocked 0-60 only 6.5 seconds) and the brakes more than up to the task. A comfortable driving position and visibility ruled by outsiders who do not ever bother us whether navigating city streets, changing lanes on the highway or when parking (reverse camera helps). Children find it easy to get both in and out, and they comment on the large door handles, large windows, air vents on top of head room and generous storage in the cabin. Land Cruiser is expensive, but we do not think any owner would feel buyer's remorse.
Our biggest regret is that during our week with the Land Cruiser we never come close to exploring its true capabilities. There is no opportunity to crawl over the sand dunes in Dubai, navigating dark forests of the Amazon or even jump into the river and cover the rim with muddy water. We show some of the city of Los Angeles, with the exception of towing a race car to the high desert, it could just as easily be achieved by ... well, a Toyota Highlander is much cheaper. Looking at the domestic sales volume of cars just last month (the company sells only 5755 Highlanders and Land Cruisers 99th May) we are not alone in our thinking.
So, why choose Land Cruiser when his little brother will do almost as well? Why choose a cow on a donkey?
Low mule is cheap, but also far less talented. Farmers who know better, and can afford it, will pay higher prices for cattle because it is historically proven ruled toilets premium to the value of temperament, ability, ruggedness, reliability and long term.
